Under the direct supervision of the TSD Superintendent, the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) is responsible for the supervision and administration of all educational programming and instructional methodologies designed to meet the unique linguistic needs of deaf and hard of hearing children at all three of the TSD campuses (TSD-Knoxville, TSD-Nashville and WTSD-Jackson). The CAO must possess stellar leadership skills and have a plan to develop leadership potential in others. The CAO must also possess in-depth knowledge and implementation of bilingual educational programming. This knowledge and experience must include best pedagogical practices as well as how to implement bilingual and bimodal strategies in classroom instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These are not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
– Develop long term academic achievement plan for all students at all education levels
– Directly supervise principals and support staff
– Build capacity in individuals under their purview
– Manage Instructional department budget
– Direct all curriculum domains at all three campuses (TSD-Knoxville, TSD-Nashville and WTSD-Jackson).
– Serve as an Administrative Team Member under the TSD Superintendent
– Act as superintendent’s designee when assigned
– Coordinate with state of Tennessee Department of Education to ensure adaptation and rigor of the educational framework for all three campuses (TSD-Knoxville, TSD-Nashville and WTSD-Jackson) satisfies state regulations.
– Develop and maintain relationships with LEAs across the state
– Establish and monitor the implementation of professional development sessions for teachers and staff
– Assist in the development of appropriate Emergency Action Procedures
– Effectively communicate with staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders
– Establish training sessions for bilingual instructional implementation for families, teachers, and students
– Ensure appropriate bilingual instructional implementation
– Implement latest educational technology to support student success
– Develop and monitors action plans aligned to the strategic plan
– Monitors leading indicators and makes real-time adjustments, reports data monthly
– Write grants to directly benefit student academic growth and increased educational outcomes.

Teacher of the Blind & Low Vision (TVI) – Part-Time

St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn seeks a NYS certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join the educational team in support of the education of students who are DeafBlind and/or have Deaf with low vision with their IEP goals and classroom participation.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work with a caseload of students on an individual basis through the models of Push-In, Pull-Out and community settings, in accordance with IEP mandates.

h. Coordinates the placements for interns and student teachers, including housing needs if they are residential. Provides them with the Intern Handbook and reviews school policies and procedures. Organizes and presents information at an orientation meeting, including review of the health and safety plan.

i. Liaison to colleges and universities who request intern or student teaching placements. Assists in developing affiliation agreements with the universities.

j. Participates on the Child Study Team.

k. Assists in developing and implementing the annual Family Learning Workshop.

l. Organizes a “Holiday Mart shopping experience for the preschool and elementary students.

n. Organizes donations from staff to families nominated for the “Angel Tree” at the holidays. Also, coordinates donations and using funds in the Children’s Fund throughout the year.

p. Records and tracks enrollment data.

Working Conditions:

Works with active deaf and hard-of-hearing children throughout the day. May be required to supervise students during special activities. Walks around and stands a great deal of the time in order to instruct and assess effectively.

Duties require possible daily exposure to infectious, communicable, and contagious diseases. Teachers at OSD will utilize ASL for interactions with staff, students, and parents. Sign language communication is essential to communicate at OSD.

Required to be a Mandatory Reporter. Some positions may require the ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and pass the agency pupil-transportation vehicle, class-10 examination.

Nurse Supervisor (Mon- Thurs 6:45 AM – 3:15 PM; Fri. 6:30 AM – 2:00 PM)

EMPLOYEE STATUS

This position is an exempt, full-time, 12-month position. This employee must be a certified Registered Nurse with school nursing certification preferred.

ROLE RELATIONSHIPS

Nurse Supervisor is responsible to the Chief Operating Officer.

DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

Nurses in the WPSD Health Center work shifts which provides services 24 hours per day when school is in session. Duties include the following:

Nursing/Clinical Duties:

Supervises all other shift nurses at WPSD
Distributing daily medications as prescribed
Annual Health student screening and associated documentation
Eye Exams
Scoliosis screening
Heights/weight and BMI calculations
Require state physicals and assisting the physician with sport and state required physicals
Assisting in maintaining medical records for students in a confidential manner. Distinguishing between FERPA and HIPPA regulations. Resource person for student health information.
Assessing injured or ill students and providing routine and emergency medical care when necessary.
Notification of parents regarding referrals for students to be seen by specialist, i.e., cardiologist, neurologist, orthopedics, etc.
Contacting school physician regarding the health of students, medications, and the need for the school physician to examine particular students.
Restriction and release notification for participation in Physical Education and sports to the Chief Operating Officer and Physical Education Teachers.
Communicating with department supervisors, dorm staff, teachers, parents, the dietician, the school physician and the diabetic educator at Children’s Hospital regarding health issues when necessary.
Coordinate/Assist with yearly scoliosis screening on age appropriate students
Notification of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of all serious accidents/injuries occurring to students and staff as soon as possible.
Coordinate initial sports physicals and precertification physicians within WPIAL guidelines for sports
Must be aware of all shift responsibilities in the event of emergency coverage.
Participate in intake evaluation of prospective students if needed
Maintain daily log of students seen by school physician for State Auditor
Arranging for special diets and communication with the consulting dietician
Assists with consulting physician or nurse practitioner Monday through Thursday

Yearly written evaluation of staff and maintain proper documentation.

Authorize staff Request for Leave and provide the Human Resources Department with the Request Forms.
Distribution of yearly medical histories to Administration and provide updates as needed.
Coordination of summer camp health services with the camp director. This includes, but is not limited to, review camp physicals and applications.

Writing monthly Health Center report and provide to the Chief Executive Officer and Department Directors.
Responsible for ordering all Health Center supplies, equipment and medications. Maintaining the correct paperwork associated with ordering.

Review annually and develop new policies and procedures as needed.

Staffing the health care center for extracurricular activities as directed by the department director.

Speech-Language Pathologist

This is an eleven-month exempt position with primary responsibility of evaluating, coordinating, implementing, and/or monitoring the treatment of communication disorders to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children from birth to 21 years of age as determined through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) procedures of evaluation and individual education plans (IEP). The Outreach Services Administrator supervises this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Administers, interprets, and reports results of diagnostic evaluations to assess speech/language/communication abilities of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing including, but not limited to the following: articulation, vocal quality, auditory skills, expressive and receptive language, sign language (ASL), speechreading, pragmatics, and functional communication.
Plans and implements therapeutic services through individual and/or group instruction for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children with speech/language/communication disorders to meet vocational, instructional, and social demands; observes and tests for progress.
Provides intervention for students utilizing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) modalities including voice output devices; supports school staff in incorporating communication devices into the learning environment.
Provides consultation and in-services to MSD staff and Local Educational Agencies.
Participates as a member of the IDEA Evaluation and IEP teams in addressing educational speech/language/communication difficulties.
Assists with coordination and integration of speech/language/communication services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students across all disciplines as needed.
Develops individual diagnostic profiles of student’s expressive and receptive language, which may include voice, articulation, fluency, audition, language, and sign language competencies.
Knowledge of speech, language, and hearing tests, test procedures, interpretation, presentations of findings and report writing. Specific skills include selecting assessment procedures that are reliable and valid for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. These assessments need to consider the student’s primary mode of communication and the goal of the specific assessment.
Knowledge of normal communication development and the impact of hearing loss on all areas of development.
Knowledge of hearing devices and alternative listening devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM systems.
Knowledge of evidenced-based, speech/language/communication therapy with a specific focus on effective interventions for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children. Ability to diagnose problems and functioning level and provide appropriate therapy. Skilled at establishing trust and rapport with students.
Ability to provide appropriate intervention for students utilizing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.
Ability to support staff in regards to incorporation of AAC devices in the classroom in learning environments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents, and ability to work effectively as one of a team.
Must meet the required American Sign Language competency level of Intermediate within three years of hire date.

EDUCATION REQUIRED/PREFERRED
Graduation from an accredited college or university with Master’s degree in the area of speech- language pathology as approved by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Possession and maintenance of an active certificate from the Board of Healing Arts (Missouri)

Three years of successful provision of speech/language therapy to children and previous experience in diagnostic procedures preferred.

Psychologist

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, conducts and reports results of multi-disciplinary (including psycho-educational) evaluations of currently enrolled students and public school students evaluated through the Resource Center on Deafness.
Provides individual and group counseling to students based on personal and/or educational counseling when indicated or requested.
Consults with administrators, teachers, dormitory and nursing staff as needed.
Plans and/or participates in in-service programs for staff.
Works in conjunction with members of the IEP team to develop behavior management plans. Coordinates the implementation and monitoring of these plans.
Attends staffing and evaluation team meetings for individual students. Devises strategies for the remediation or treatment of behavioral and academic problems.
Refers students to other personnel or agencies for services when necessary.
Conducts functional behavior assessments.
Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED/PREFERRED
Master’s Degree in School Psychology from an accredited college or university.
K-12 Certification as a School Psychologist issued by the State Board of Education or License issued by the Division of Professional Registration.
Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential preferred.

Director of Alaska State School for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Sensory Services

The AKSD director is responsible for the administration and oversight of the Alaska State School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AKSD) from preschool through the high school grades. The director is also responsible for the direct supervision and evaluation of various AKSD special education staff and related services providers. This position will research, develop, and implement curriculum and programs related to Deaf Education, as well as collaborate with the school principal in the evaluation of certificated and classified special education/related services (AKSD) staff. Hiring and assignments will be reviewed with the school principal to assure appropriate input and alignment with school staff. This position requires a valid Alaska type B administrative certificate and reports to and is evaluated by the senior director of the Special Education Department. This position has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in deaf education, or certificate endorsement in deaf education.
Fluency in English and American Sign Language, demonstrated by the advanced level or above on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) or comparable sign language skills assessment.
A valid Alaska type B administrative certificate within three years of hire.
A minimum of three years administrative experience.
A minimum of five years of experience in deaf education.

Extensive knowledge of ethical practices and professional standards of all programs assigned within related services, special education, and deaf education.

Essential Job Functions
The responsibilities listed below are representative of the special functions of this position. The successful candidate:
Collaborates with school principals to provide administrative direction, supervision, and support to the AKSD program at each of the designated school sites.
Provides leadership for the AKSD program including staff development, planning, and implementation in conjunction with general education and special education departments.
Provides for interpreter and related services coordination, teacher assistant supervision, and administration support.
Provides for continued development and implementation of the AKSD strategic plan with involvement of all stakeholders.
Collaborates with school sites and the Assessment and Evaluation department on the administration of standardized state and federal tests.
Supervises the AKSD coordinator and provides assistance regarding their duties.
Communicates regularly with identified stakeholders, including building administrators, teachers, staff, parents, Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED), and the Alaska Deaf Council.
Represents AKSD at statewide meetings including the Deaf Education Board (DEB) and Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) board.
Collaborates with principals of school sites to support training and supervision of staff and inclusive programming for students.
Attends IEP meetings as schedule allows, oversees IEP compliance, and supports training for IEP compliance as needed.
Supports teachers in the monitoring of student profiles, progress, and achievement.
Serves as a resource person to local and state education agencies concerning services for deaf and hard of hearing students statewide.
Develops and maintains a database of all deaf and hard of hearing students; serves as a resource as needed.
Develops and maintains a statewide database of all teachers and related staff working with deaf and hard of hearing students.
Develops, maintains, and monitors the state ILP or EHDI coordinator to monitor and develop transition plans for children ages 0 through 3 who may attend AKSD at preschool or kindergarten age.
Reports data and staff qualifications (SLPI levels) to the designated districts and DEED on an annual basis.
In conjunction with the senior director of Special Education, develops and manages both general and grant budgets as they relate to AKSD and statewide educational interpreters.
Coordinates, develops, and maintains a plan with EHDI and infant learning programs statewide to assist deaf and hard of hearing students transition to AKSD/ASD and other local school districts for services acting as a liaison between agencies.
Plans and oversees family sign classes, annual retreat(s), deaf artist in residence, MJ Phillips Art competition, Extended School Year services, and other AKSD extra-curricular and cultural events with AKSD staff involvement.
Coordinates with the Student Living Center administration to facilitate students’ school enrollment and jointly resolve student issues. Assists administration and principals in the assignment and evaluation of certificated and classified staff when appropriate.
Is involved in the selection and procurement of a variety of contracted services.
Attends deaf community activities, including those in the evening, as appropriate.
Assists the senior director of Special Education in the development, provision, and monitoring of sensory service programs for BVI, audiology, hard of hearing, and assistive technology within ASD.
Directly supervises BVI, audiology, hard of hearing, and assistive technology sensory service programs for students district-wide
Supervises and evaluates AKSD, BVI, audiology, hard of hearing, and assistive technology program staff, including certificated related service providers, classified, and clerical support staff.
Works collaboratively with other ASD administrators and principals on issues pertinent to the provision of AKSD and sensory services.
Works collaboratively with other special education directors on division planning, compliance issues, and provision services.
Works closely with ASD counsel on legal issues, including due process hearings.
Prepares, implements, and maintains department budgets.
Works with the senior director of Special Education and other directors to comply with state and federal mandates including corrective actions as a result of the state auditing process.
