Position Summary:

This position is responsible for providing professional, confidential administrative support to the Center Director of WESP-DHH. Director, Instruction (KDES/MSSD)

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chief Academic Officer, the Director of Instruction leads the development, ongoing review, and revision of a comprehensive, articulated, standards-based curriculum that aligns with instruction and classroom assessment for KDES and MSSD.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Instruction

Leads the work outlined in the Excellence by Design plans; ensures that all aspects of curriculum are aligned with content and performance standards of Clerc Center partner state, meet the requirements of the Education of the Deaf Act, and align with the philosophy and vision of the Clerc Center; works with demonstration school and other unit administrators and personnel to develop and implement annual and long-term curriculum plans; and works with demonstration school administrators and other identified personnel to institute data-driven decision-making to support, curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Oversees efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of content related materials, curriculum material, programs, and services; guides adaptation of curriculum to meet needs and outcome attainment of deaf and hard of hearing students in a bilingual education setting; overseas family education program ensuring inclusive programing for diverse families in both schools; ensures that curriculum addresses needs of traditionally underserved students and incorporates understanding of cultural diversity, social justice and equity, and family involvement; communicates about curriculum development and implementation with school personnel, families, and other identified audiences; and performs administrative duties related to budget, resource allocation, and employee supervision.
Oversees the Clerc Center Equity and Excellence by Design plans and ensures action items are completed on the identified schedule; Leads the design and implementation of the Clerc Center’s professional development plan; Collaborates with the University Chief Diversity Officer, creating collaborative or parallel programming and transformational efforts.
Serves as a Clerc Center administrator by serving on the Clerc Center Leadership Team; supports implementation of the Clerc Center strategic plan and other institutional priorities to ensure compliance with Federal mandates outlined in the Education of the Deaf Act (EDA).
Directs the development, ongoing review, and revision of a comprehensive, articulated, standards-based curriculum that aligns with instruction and classroom assessment for KDES and MSSD; and oversees and supports ongoing curriculum work at the demonstration schools. Works with the Clerc Center Instructional Leadership Team to conceptualize and implement the process for on-going evaluation and improvement of the KDES/MSSD curriculum program by instituting a systematic review process; establishes and facilitates processes to evaluate the effectiveness of content related materials, textbooks, web-based programs, and services within KDES/MSSD; and manages curriculum material selection and acquisition process.
Takes a leadership role with the Instructional Leadership teams of both schools by monitoring progress on Excellence by Design (accreditation) Plans; Develops yearly multi-track professional development plans to align with accreditation action plans, goals and objectives, including professional development on equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice. Develops semi-annual summaries of progress to share with the community. Coordinates and leads EBD Planning Team and serves as the liaison between CEASD/MSA and the Clerc Center.
Oversees the design, planning, and implementation of the demonstration school assessment program including annual administration of state-level assessments; serves as the point of contact for companies providing assessments for the schools.
Oversees Family Involvement and Education programs for KDES and MSSD. Works with the Manager of Family Involvement to design, develop and provide educational workshops for families at all age levels including the Family ASL program, Shared Reading Project, Transition programming, bilingual education and other topics relevant for parents.
Oversees Emerging Signers Program in collaboration with appropriate school personnel and ESP Interpreter Coordinator.
Works with demonstration school administrators and other identified personnel to institute data-driven decision-making to support, curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Provides support to both schools by designing a comprehensive instructional program for all students to prepare them for college and career readiness through the development of Individual Education Plans.
Communicates about curriculum development and implementation with school personnel, families, and other identified audiences; as requested, develops reports to meet Federal mandates, Gallaudet University, or Clerc Center requirements;
Oversees the development and maintenance of a Clerc Center Learning Management System as one tool for curriculum materials for instructional staff.
Equity

Collaborates with the University Chief Diversity Officer, creating collaborative or parallel programming and transformational efforts.
Oversees the Clerc Center Equity Plan, ensures action items are completed on the identified schedule, drafts quarterly update reports for internal use, external visibility, Clerc Center Leadership, University Leadership and the Board of Trustees.
Takes a leadership role with the Instructional Leadership Teams on multicultural curriculum and program transformation efforts to assist teachers in enhancing their capacity for addressing equity, inclusion, and social justice issues in the classroom.
Ensures there is support for social justice and equity teams, initiatives, and concerns, and that those teams have the support and training necessary to support their department; coordinates all work of the social justice teams to ensure Clerc Center wide progress.

Leadership and Operations

Assists the Chief Academic Officer with developing annual and long-range budget projections for curriculum development and implementation, and equity work at the Clerc Center. Oversees Curriculum and Assessment budget, including all budget planning, projections, and expenditures on temporary staff including substitute teachers, and long term extended temporary teachers and aides.
Oversees assigned grant funds received to ensure timely and strategic use and prepares reporting and documentation for donor reporting
Supervises, develops, and evaluates assigned staff, conducts annual performance evaluations, develops professional development plans aligned with future goals and skill development needs; addresses personnel issues as they arise in alignment with Gallaudet policies and procedures.
Serves as an active, contributing member of the Clerc Center community and Gallaudet University as a whole.
Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX, and commits to completing Title IX training and compliance requirements on an annual basis.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Director of the Division of State Schools (KY) – 31114286

The Director of the Division of State Schools will have a physical workstation at the KDE Sower Building in Frankfort, but will be present on each campus weekly, pending travel approvals.

The Director of the Division of State Schools will provide oversight of the operations and management of the KSB and the KSD while also providing support to school leaders. This position will also collaborate with stakeholders to improve student outcomes, including a focus on the effective implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

KDE Level Activities:

Participate in OSEEL leadership activities and events as directed by the OSEEL Associate Commissioner.

Experience educating students with low vision or blindness and students who are Deaf or hard of hearing is preferred.
