WI Department of Public Instruction Center Director – WI Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

This position is a member of the DPI Special Education Team and reports to the State Director of Special Education. The Center Director will administer, supervise, and provide leadership for the operation of WESP-DHH including direct responsibility for the school program (WI School for the Deaf) as well as the outreach program. The Center Director’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the overall management of the Center that serves as a statewide educational resource to benefit all Wisconsin children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In addressing this statewide leadership responsibility, the director works collaboratively with the DPI Special Education Team to coordinate efforts and provide support in areas of shared responsibility.

Teacher of the Deaf

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION:

This position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and is responsible for providing standards-based instruction and support to K-12th grade learners who are Deaf/hard of hearing and who may have additional needs. Utilizes Colorado Academic Standards and benchmarks in establishing instructional goals; and provides assessments that monitor learner progress, in a safe and civil school environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree in Education or closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university, with specialization in Deaf Education
Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist: Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, or comparable endorsement
Subject area endorsement or specialization
Experience teaching / working with children (in an educational environment) who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing, or/or who may have multiple disabilities
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced (3+) skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy / procedures

Total Communication Early Childhood Instructor of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Work with staff to develop and provide a continuum of educational activities throughout the curriculum; attend IEP meetings and other meetings required for the delivery of educational services; other duties as assigned.

Coordinator of Teaching and Learning

I. Job Summary

Provide curriculum and instruction leadership and administrative oversight to licensed/non-licensed staff and students and families at Metro Deaf School. Works collaboratively with all stakeholders and always acts in the best interest of meeting the needs of the whole child.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

Provide leadership and oversee curriculum and instruction at Metro Deaf School.

Works collaboratively with the school’s Principal and the Executive Director on the administrative team for the school.

Oversee the scheduling and implementation of all state and district assessments for the school teams, including standards based assessments for some students.

Develop and plan all professional development and professional learning communities for staff.

Works with teachers/staff to ensure all IEP modifications and accommodations listed are implemented.

Serve as a curriculum leader and helps review current curriculum and identify curriculum needs in the school.

Develops and maintains a curriculum purchasing timeline for the school.

Be the instructional coach for all teachers and a resource to support instructional strategies.

Work in collaboration with the Executive Director and School Principal on providing informal feedback and coaching to teachers. Formal teacher evaluations will be conducted by the Executive Director and School Principal.

Support the school principal in implementing student discipline policies and procedures.

Participate in interviews as it relates to potential vacancies that need to be filled.

Serves on the World’s Best Workforce committee.

Serves on the transition advisory committee

Serves on the technology committee.

Support Team Leaders in organizing and collecting Team newsletters (four teams); Team Leaders should ensure newsletters are proofed prior to submitting them to the Coordinator of Teaching and Learning and then submit to the school principal.

Communicates in a timely manner with staff, students, and families regarding upcoming events to ensure everyone is aware of a scheduled event and to ensure there are no scheduling conflicts.

Oversees teachers’ “Sub Box,” ensuring materials are easily accessible, applicable to the level of students, plentiful yet meaningful and replenished periodically.

Maintains open communication with all staff members.

Attends some school activities and events such as teen nights, high school and middle school camping trips, and PTG meetings.

Attend MDS board meetings as requested.

Coordinate four family education nights per year.

Director of Statewide Mainstream and Deaf Education Programming

The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf (MECDHH/GBSD) is seeking a highly motivated experienced educator who possesses strong communication skills, proven leadership skills, and organizational qualities to fill a full time, 260-day position of Director of Mainstream and Deaf Education Programming in our Academic Department.

Primary Responsibilities:
• To administrate the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf Pre-K-12 academic mainstream and deaf education programs within the four Portland Public Schools and on Mackworth Island.
• To lead, guide, and direct every member of the Academic and Support staff for the Pre-K-12 programs
• To be responsible for a system of supervision and evaluation for all Pre-k-12 staff
• To administer allocated funds in order to ensure proper use and control of department

Minimum Qualifications:
• A Master’s degree in Deaf Education, or a related field, with coursework in school administration
• 10 years of experience in Deaf education to include classroom experience
• Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience
• State of Maine certification 292 Teacher of the Deaf and 030 Administrator of Special Education or willingness to obtain
• Such alternatives to the qualifications listed above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

MPS Secondary(Middle/High school) Principal

The Secondary Principal provides leadership and supervision to promote the effective teaching and learning of students and staff.

Supervises educational programming which is designed to prepare students to meet the educational standards established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Provides direct supervision of the performance of all Teachers in the department through classroom observations and regularly scheduled meetings.

Implements disciplinary action when necessary.

Ensures effective collaboration with families, LEAs and other representative agencies.

Works collaboratively with TLC specialists and clinicians.

Oversees the development of each student’s IEP goals, objectives and progress reports.

Ensures effective collaboration among all members of the department.

Works with the educational team in the department to ensure that all TLC policies and procedures are followed.

Assists in developing and maintaining partnerships with the Framingham Public Schools to ensure effective mainstream programming when applicable.

Develops and maintains a budget for the department and secures appropriate and necessary materials for teaching/learning.

Carry out disciplinary action on employees in the department, as needed.

Ensures sensitivity and understanding of cultural differences within the school community.

Assists in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation of all staff in the department.

Conducts annual evaluations of department staff.

Serves as a member of the supervisory team to provide educational leadership to The Learning Center for the Deaf.

May be delegated and trained to conduct medication administration or certain medical procedure responsibilities for students.

Maintains student and staff confidentiality.

Oversees the implementation of behavior plans designed for individual students, as needed.

Licensed by Massachusetts DESE as a Principal, Teacher of the Deaf or related licensure field (or certification from reciprocal state)

Vice Principal/Coordinator of Special Education

VICE PRINCIPAL/COORDINATOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Coordinates and/or directs all aspects of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Process for all students enrolled or applying for enrollment. Responsible for WVSDB compliance with all applicable federal and state statutes and regulations associated with the educational rights of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Blind/Visually Impaired or Deafblind. Provides technical assistance and professional learning opportunities for creation of IEP goals related to the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards, and West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards, access, and transition. Supervises and evaluates professional and/or service/auxiliary personnel as assigned by immediate supervisor. Develops, coordinates and/or supervises special projects as assigned. Assists the principal with the responsibility for the supervision, management, and control of the schools pertaining to general supervision of all school activities involving students, teachers, and other school personnel. (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1).

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
• Follow applicable school and departmental policies and procedures as well as State regulations and State Board of Education policies.
• Provides supervision over the health, education and welfare of the students in the assigned schools.
• Responsible for establishing, implementing and evaluating departmental policies and regulations for the schools with the approval of the Chief Academic Officer.
• Responsible for collaboration on developing, implementing, evaluating and revising the curriculum of the schools in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer, as it aligns with state curriculum standards. This includes necessary scheduling of the instructional program staff during regular school year, as well as, any Summer Camp Experiences or Extended School Year Programs.
• Make assignments for duties and responsibilities for members of the school staff to facilitate effective programmatic outcomes for students.
• Evaluates the performance of assigned staff in accordance with WVBE Policies 5310 and 5314.
• Serve on the Admissions Committee for acceptance of new students after formal and/or informal evaluation. This also involves counseling in conjunction with the WVSDB Outreach Personnel and parents.
• Develop and maintain a good working relationship with other members of the staff, parents, students and the general public.
• Request, store and issue supplies, instructional materials and equipment as needed by this unit.
• Supervise the maintenance of student records, files and other information in accordance with regulations and policies governing confidentiality.
• Recommend persons to fill staff vacancies in accordance with WVBE Policy 5000/WV Code 18A-4-7a for professional staff or WV Code 18A-4-8b for service staff and to secure substitute personnel as needed via SmartFind Express (SEMS).
• Arrange for and direct applicable professional development for faculty and staff in collaboration with Professional Development Committees and the CAO.
• Serve as a consultant in the areas of the D/HH, B/LV or multi-handicapping conditions as applicable and as directed by the CAO.

• Review teachers’ weekly lesson plans to ensure appropriate content and delivery of instruction.
• Obtain substitutes, professional and service, as needed per WVSDB policies/procedures.
• Interview applicants in accordance with WVBE Policy 5000/WV Code 18A-4-7a for professional position vacancies and WV Code 18A-4-8b for service personnel vacancies.
• Evaluate job performance of employees in accordance with WVBE Policy 5310 and 5314.
• Conducts school staff meetings as necessary.
• Monitor the development, implementation and evaluation of Individual Educational Programs for each student.
• Review and monitoring of student report cards to assure accuracy and graduation requirements are met.
• Arrange for professional development opportunities to directly benefit instructional practices within the department.
• Review of all WVEIS data on an ongoing basis, including but not limited to, attendance, disciplinary, student and teacher schedules, teacher certification as it aligns with course code requirements and that teacher schedules are equitable. Checklist of reviewed items must be submitted to the CAO within 10 days of the close of the grading period.
• Approve purchase orders and submit for processing to the CAO.
• Complete and submit work orders through School Dude for maintenance and/or technology issues, as necessary.
• Act as a public relations person for the school and WVSDB.

o Responsible for departmental information to be distributed to parents on an on-going, regular basis.
• Attend student Eligibility/IEP meetings.
• Execute and monitor efficient evacuation of building during required monthly disaster/fire drills and maintains proper documentation of these drills.
• Ensure that all staff are aware of school safety policies and procedures.

• Seeks grants and other sources of funding to improve the quality of learning, start new programs and provide additional educational opportunities in the school system.
• As requested by the CAO, research best practices in educational programming and makes recommendations on how to apply those practices within the school system.
• Analyzes students’ educational data, including standardized tests, and make recommendations to the CAO on ways to improve student learning and educational programming based on the analysis of data.
• Coordinates the adoption of instructional materials, e.g., text and supplementary materials for the school system with the CAO.
o Serves on the textbook adoption committee.
• Make recommendations to the CAO regarding curriculum materials and activities.
• Provides oversight of special projects as they relate to curricula and instruction within the school assigned.
• Maintains good public relations with the community and utilizes fully the community resources to enrich the learning programs.
• Reviews WVDE policies and administrative procedures related to curriculum and instruction in order to ensure compliance at the school level with current policies and procedures. Reports of any irregularities are to be provided to the CAO.
• Conducts surveys of professional development needs within the assigned department.
• Completes special projects as requested by the CAO.
• Reviews all transcripts of students anticipating receipt of a regular diploma in the fall of their junior and senior years and advises of the completeness of the transcript.

Lecturer

The University of Iowa program in American Sign Language invites applications for a non-tenure-track lecturer position for 2020-21 academic year. The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possible re-appointment of up to two additional years, and the position will be renewable thereafter in three-year increments, pending collegiate approval and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience. Responsibilities include teaching six courses a year (20-24 s.h.) and contributing to curriculum and materials development for the program. This could be six sections of ASL per year (maximum 20 students per section) using an immersion curriculum (Signing Naturally) or a combination of language and specialty courses taught in ASL. Summer employment possible if desired, dependent upon program needs and resources. Starting Date: August 19, 2020.

Required Qualifications: fluency in ASL; Master’s Degree in Teaching ASL or related field; American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA) certification or willingness to obtain certification once employed.

Desired Qualifications: Language teaching experience at the college level, ability to offer advanced courses such as ASL linguistics, ASL Literature, Deaf culture, Deaf studies, ASL/English interpreting, or Deaf education.
